BACKGROUND:
Just before the release of SOCOM 3, we at SOTG made what we feel was a very successful attempt to advertise the release of three additional maps for SOCOM II: Last Bastion, Liberation and Afterhours. To play on these new maps, the purchase of an HDD (Hard Disk Drive) as necessary by all participants. Fortunately, this year, all that is necessary for participation is ownership of an external USB memory device. (See SOCOM 3 FAQ in the Online Community area for further information on how to obtain the map packs). Even though the trend around the online community was not to bother purchasing this expensive piece of hardware ($100) just to play these three maps, I was able to entice an extremely large crowd of SOCOM players to participate in tournament that played EXLUSIVELY on the Hard Drive Map, "Last Bastion."
Though there weren't a lot of people able to play in the tournament because they may not have had the necessary hardware, we gathered 64 teams of four players (256 players) to compete for four copies of SOCOM 3 that I purchased out of pocket, as well as some SOCOM Boonie Hats generously provided by SONY Marketing. The first place team, MY QUADS, took the free video games in the first week of release, and even the second place team, [LTU] ARAS were given a 50% discount on their SOCOM 3 titles.
Needless to say, the event went off without a hitch, and it was an extremely popular event in the SOCOM Community. We at SOTG are even more prepared this year to accommodate more than 128 teams in an eight vs. eight breach championship.
