Downloadable Map Packs: Confirmed
http://www.gaming-age.com/news/2006/2/21-34
To sum it up for people who don't want to read, this says that it has ben confirmed that new maps will be available starting in March of 2006. They will be downloadable in the form of packs (implying more than one at a time) and will include updated Socom 2 maps, and brand news maps entirely. The first pack will contain Last Bastion, After Hours, and Liberation, which were only available for the hdd in Socom 2.
Now, for those saying "how will we store it". The maps can be stored on an hdd, flash drive, or a PSP memory stick duo (not sure what that means). So basically, if you don't have those, you'll have to buy one to play the new maps, in addition, map packs will cost a price of $5.99 each.
That's a basic summary, now we can all go nuts.

Awesome. I can't wait to play After Hours day demo. You'd think that they would have told us about this earlier if the new maps are coming out next month.

WoW i have been preaching about this crap for a while on this message board and got flamed many times. only i thought it would be for the PS3 and not for the PS2. in a post a couple months ago i suggested the reason for the first and only socom poll was to vote for a bundle of maps but i was told "im reading into it" and "its just a poll and nothing else". i kind of figured if we all voted for crossroads then we would get crossroads, death trap, night stalker and abandoned just for example.
Anyways this was great news and thanx for posting.......................

OMG, for those who haven't played Liberation, Last Bastion, and After Hours. You guy's are in for a surprise man. Last Bastion is the largest map of Socom 2 hence you had to have the HDD(Which I own BTW) It is hard to explain the layout of the map but there's water on one side and a big mountain fortress on the other. Liberation is a fun map too, with 3 closable doors as choke points it makes the map interesting(Let's hope Zipper fixes the lag on Liberation). Liberation is an Arab setting with many alley ways and a huge long road on the one side and a route through a market place on the other. After Hours is a huge urban city enviroment that resembles South Korea and when I say "Great Map" it is, especially if it won't be suppression only like it is in Socom 2. For those who don't or aren't thinking about getting the map pack of the 3 HDD maps you guy's are missing out big time, because these are some of the greatest maps yet that not many people have played until the map pack comes out. And with the cutomization of the maps (Weapon settings, day/night, game types) it will some killer action heading your way.
(To bad I have a leg up on most of you by already playing the maps =P)
That's my 2 cents ~Double_Life~

wait... so are the socom 1 and 2 maps going to be downloaded on an HDD? what about all of the slim ps2 owners? and what's that psp thing? This is very confusing, im not following what is needed to play the new maps.
also... $5.99 per pack? That is so gay how you have to pay for maps. Don't they have enough money. I know $5.99 isn't much, but still, you shouldn't have to pay that much for the maps you download. Can anybody explain more about what these memory units are, how they are used, and how much they are please? This is good news to hear, and i'm thankful that they actually are doing this...but it's also very confusing.

(I hope I got the quotes right, lol)
But yea Discombobulate mentioned how they can be attained
A Flash Drive is a device that can be plugged into your USB port (Where headset goes) and it works like a portable hard drive, The downside to this is most of us have a keyboard and headset for their PS2, In that case you have to drop one to acheive another so to speak. The Memory Stick Duo is the card that is used with the PSP to save games and put stuff on the card. Most likely the Stick Duo will be used with the PSP link cable from PSP to PS2(That's what I'm thinking). The HDD is the Hard Drive for PS2 that came with Final Fantasy 11 and is out of production because it worked with the fat PS2 and not the slim one
(Discombobulate how you get them quotes to work? lol)
You use [/quote] to end a quote. You forgot the "/" -Cheesy

Using either a compatible USB Mass Storage Device (such as a USB Flash/Thumb drive), internal hard disk drive (40GB) (for PlayStation 2) or a PSP (PlayStation Portable) system with Memory Stick Duo Media (minimum 32MB) as storage, SOCOM fans can download any of the SOCOM 3 Map Packs, take them anywhere and access them online using their SOCOM 3 account for all-new tactical military action.

You can use a usb flash drive, or whatever the PSP thing, I'm not sure about it.
All i know is this: I won't be spending $50+ just play a few old maps.
More about usb flash drives:

and this final one should answer any of your questions about flash drives:

Look in your Sunday paper for adds on a 512mb flash drive they only cost like 20 bucks when they are on sale and is really not that expensive when you think about it, better thann buying a PSP to get the maps lol

In all reality, you would just need a friend who wanted to download them, if you have a PSP. Then you could just copy their save file, unless they took steps to prevent this.
