America has never even been a real full "Democracy". I don't think we'll ever accomplish a full Democracy.

America was not intended to be a real democracy. First off when the constitution or even the articles of confederation were written it was not intended to be a true democracy.
I can go get my US government class notes but the founders were not stupid. The states are way to far apart and the country is too large to be a true democracy were evryone meets and decides on an issue.

Exactly, I think we're better suited for the republic that we are rather than a democracy.

America is not a true democracy.
In a true democracy, which does not exist in any major country... every person in the country votes on every subject. So instead of voting for representatives and for presidents, we would vote for all kinds of bills and stuff every single day...
You can see this is impossible..
This is why we are also partially a republic, we have representatives (republic) who we elect (democracy) to make the decisions for us.

Politics
What really pisses me off is the extremeist democrats or republicans. They are always blaming each other for something else and taking credit for something that the other side really did. But if you try to go halfway and be independant, you will just be ignored. So, there are just 2 sets of ideals to run the U.S. government by. In my opinion, neither of the political parties do a very good job anyway.
|
Yeah, not to mention that the terms Republican and Democrat have become quite loose over the years. I hear that in other countries that you can have faith that a candidate will actually stick to the parties ideals and such.

Voting
Voting is great. If we do get another Hitler in office, we can't blame him or anyone else. Then it would be our own fault. But in the presidential election, its a rip. The electoral college votes based on the state's popular vote. WTF is up with that? It should be set up so that the people actually vote for the president.
|
The electoral college pisses me off. Tiger mentioned that it makes the states matter, but why the hell should state matter? I vote Lincoln and say that the Constitution/Union was founded more by the people and not the state. It shouldn't matter if you're from state X. The fact that you are an American citizen is much more relevant.

The good ol' American justice system
America - The only civilized place where you can rape and murder a 17 year old girl and only get 15 years in prison. Come on. It should be like "an eye for an eye." Well, maybe in some cases. But, if you intentionally kill someone (when not defending yourself) you should be given the chair or life in prison. In America, you can get away with crimes just because the arresting officer did not read you your rights. And then there's politics in the justice system. Its all corrupt.
|
I do agree that it's corrupt. But you must see things like the Michael Jackson case as a triumph of true justice. Sure, it was obvious he was having sex/whatever with children but there wasn't enough proof which is what really matters. The entire idea of prison is to rehabilitate, but nowadays that has a snowball's chance in hell of working.

Political Correctness
"Freedom Fries" because France didn't help us in the war. "Hate Crimes" if a white kid hits a kid of another race. And much, much more. It is going out of control. And it is getting annoying. People need to face it. The world isn't perfect. All those over-protective soccer moms out there need to accept that there are more than white kids out there and that there is violence on TV. It is just how the world is.
|
Political Correctness = Satan
Just abolish it.
If a black guy can say ***** so can I(although I wouldn't)

Taxes
The government taxes the hell out of us. About 30% of people's paycheck is taken by the government. And our government is spending billions and billions on nukes and bombs. The government can take a ridiculous amount of money from you and can still be in a deficit. They need to figure out a way to use their money wisely.
|
True. I think we need to tax the rich more actually. Not a flat tax for everyone just tax the rich a higher percentage. Why you may ask? Because 70% of 10 000 000 is still 7 000 000 as opposed to someone who makes considerably less and gets taxed more. Frankly we could make more money if done correctly and I won't be sad that someone can't buy a second Ferrari.
My conclusion:
I love america :)
Even with it's flaws it's still a great country. I want to move north because I like the cold but I'd seriously be facked if the North Atlantic Conveyer Belt shutdown...

But by electing someone, we're just asking the person to make decisions for us because his policies match our own opinions, so it's still a 'true' democracy, isn't it?

But he could be like Palpatine and totally change face and become a horrible dictator with a power base in the rest of the judicial, exectuive and legislative groups...
Of course that would be against the will of the people so it's put into Republic where the leader we think is best rules for a time till we choose another.

In a true democracy, everyone votes on everything. A republic is electing someone to represent you. Its kind of an indirect democracy in a way.
