This is an excellent post.
I'm what you would call a noob I suppose. I bought Socom about three years ago specifically for the online play, played for about 4 hours, woke up the next morening and surprise! No internet anymore. The single player bored the hell out of me, so I stopped playing totally. I just bought S3 yesterday, and I'm in the process of learning everything, so I almost always end with at least a 2:1 deaths to kills ratio. This morning I played a game where I was at the top of the scoring list after like the 6th round - with only 4 points! Believe it or not, I have yet to willingly quit a game (I accidentally pushed the reset button on one game when I was attempting to plug my headset back in).
So what keeps a silly little nub like me going? The fact that I know for every death I take, I become a little more familiar with my surroundings, a little more comfortable with the weapon I'm using, and a little more able to be tactical. The second to last game I played yesterday ended with me being at 19 kills and 10 deaths. Abnormal for me so far, but I still feel it wouldn't have happened if I just quit any game where I may be sucking up the playing field.
When I die, usually I try to realize what I did wrong and hopefully remember for next time how to avoid the mistake. Eventually I'll be able to fit in well with the tactical clans, which is my aim. Until then, I'll just play the unrated games and practice practice practice!
