Tips and Tactics for everything
Ok, this thread has crazy tips I have found all over this part of the forum, I DID NOT WRITE ANY OF THESE.

I thought it would be nice to just have one huge thread full of tips, so here it goes.

SNIPING

-Whenever you're sniping - calm down. I always see people get anxious and fire too soon, thereby screwing themselves.

-Also, crank up your sensitivity and lower your dead zone if you plan to snipe regularly because when they are moving very fast and such, you wanna be able to move your sticks to keep up.

-Aim for chest.

Players that pick a sniper rifle, and camp the same spot round after round, are not snipers...

Everyone on S2 that seems to think they are sniping goes to one place they think has a good vantage point, and tries to pick off a guy or two...

Movement, stealth, distance, accuracy, patience, and scouting.. these things are what makes a good sniper.

If you kill a guy or two, move! You are either spotted now, or most likely have taken down anyone who will be coming in your line of fire.

When using the sniper rifle, stay concealed.. lay prone, use windows, use the cover of crates, trees, rocks, brush... anything to stay out of enemy sight. Practice the skills that will allow you to navigate the map as quickly as possible, jumping over barriers, climbing walls, getting on roofs, diving behind cover..

To help keep your self alive, and also to help stay concealed use distance to your advantage.. After all this is why you picked the gun you did, because you can deliver shots from much farther then the average assault rifle, or SMG. Do not run to the middle of the map at the beginning of the round, or up the right where you will likely encounter enemies quickly, or to a building that will likely be surrounded within 1 minute of the round starting. Think where the enemies will be coming from, and find the position furthest from it that will still allow you to deliver shots onto the area.

Being profficient with the rifle is of the utmost importance... Practice hitting targets, that are both moving and standing still. It requires time and patience to become accurate with the sniper rifle if you want to become consistent with it.

Patience, and Scouting are two more vital characteristics of a good sniper.. Know when to take a shot, and when not to. If you see three enemies running towards you, Notify your teammates of their whereabouts, and either conceal yourself, or relocate to a better vantage that will allow you another chance at taking them down. Even an accurate sniper would perhaps be only be able to kill one or at best two moving targets, and by doing so would give away his position. On the other hand, if the targets are running away, then fire at will.. they wont be able to see you shooting, and this will confuse them. Be sure to notify your teammates in this case as well. Optimal times to snipe are when an enemy is crouched down far away from you, motionless, perhaps reloading, or looking for targets or using his headset. Take these targets down.

Practice these elements which are the things real snipers do in real war, and you will see there is a reason why they do things the way they do... and that these same things also apply to socom 2.
I'll just like to add that when you snipe make sure you don't fire until your crosshairs are on the guys body. Some people don't know that. So make you sure you have a quick finger and know when to pull.

what you use is very important as a sniper too. i will make a list for you with some pros and cons

any .50 cal gun (m87elr and m8a2a1)
pros:

one hit kill in most shots
extreme range

cons:
bad accuracy (scope wobble)*worst in the game*
*censored* reload time
bright muzzle flash can give you away
(who cares if the person you shoot doesnt get to see it, what if they have a friend you didnt see, i love watching the grass on foxhunt for a muzzle flash)
very load

sr-25 and sr-25 sd and sasr

pros:
moderate accuracy
very fast fire rate (semi-auto, not bolt action)
can be used close quarters too
not too loud (sasr is moderate, sounds like a cannon)

cons:
bad range for a scoped weapon
bad power compared to others

M40A1

hard gun to list, so i will describe:

better accuracy while standing then other guns in prone
headshots are easy to get even if they are running horizontal to you
power is less than .50, more than sasr and sr series
not too loud, but still hearable
muzzle flash isnt terrible

Thats just that part of the gun, a good sniper has a sidearm to match.

I will list those that are most used, just because there are so many.

Mark 23 (my favorite gun in the game)

most accurate pistol
.45 cal, same power as sp-10
great fire rate
12 round clip

sp-10

decent accuracy
.45 cal so is 2-3 shot kill
awsome fire rate
18 round clip

Desert Eagle .50

terrible accuracy
slow fire rate
i think 12 round clip, but please correct me cuz that is wrong
most powerful pistol

Model 18

can have good accuracy (single shot or full auto choices)
insane fire rate over most guns in the game (not limited to pistol)
power isnt great, but full auto complements this fact
17 round clip
best close quarters only

there we go, that should be all you will need for now, if you disagree please feel free to debate me on these issues, but for the most part i feel that i got these all down
Ok man first off you need to know the map before you do anything, that helps a ton, because say in Vigilance and you are lying prone in that little corner beneath that one building that you can blow, (near end of tunnels and ground turret) and you see a guy coming to the right circling around the Terrorists spawn and he will eventually end up at you, you need to know where he will come from and either wait for him, or go prone and just wait with your DE.50 (personal favourite) /Model18 and have mines where he will come, a really good part about Terrorists is their mines: you lay them where you think the enemy will go and boom, you don't need to stick around to explode em like you do with claymores. But KNOW YOUR MAPS and when your a sniper...I suggest you have a headset, communication is KEY if you do not communicate someone gets killed from behind, an easy preventative kill. I say, if you are kinda rookie but are in an Urban level, such as Sujo, Vigilance, hell maybe even Frostfire and tons more, and are unsure of your skill, try (as a SEAL) the SR-25 SD because you can fire at them and they dunno wtf is going on lol. As a Terrorist the M82A1A is good, but flash is definately noticable as someone else noted and highly innacurate, but the right sniper can use any rifle and kill the enemy, the key is stay hidden, either low/prone or high/concealed, I see some people who think they are all that sniping STANDING UP on a roof that a guy with the M60E3 can take out....stay low...know your maps, and just get confortable with a certain sniper rifle for each team and map.

Now on another note: HandGuns, I in particular am a good sniper but im even more dangerous with my handgun, get....say 1 or 2 or 3 kills with sniper, get an equal/more amount of kills with handgun, the DE.50 close range is, I think unmatched, i take 4....5 shots max to kill a person, take your DAMN TIME PEOPLE! Some people just strafe around or circle around and fire as many bullets as it takes until the enemy/themselves dies....with the DE.50i wait until they actually go in my crosshairs and fire, you can take out someone with that in 2 shots w/o a headshot its easy, on the other hand the Mark23 which i never use its either SP-10 or Mark23 SD i prefer the SP-10 just because well....personal preference, like i said get comfortable with a handgun and sniper and you will be unbeatable, well not unbeatable but get at least 3 kills each round. I prolly have forgotten a lot but I hope I helped
I think the best way to get good at sniping is to play respawn games in Chain Reaction. Most of the shots are across the map and there are is a lot of variety to the types of targets.

The best thing you can do is repitition and respawn is the best way to do so.
For starts don't go to the same places every round they will be looking for you there next round wait a round or two before you go to the same place..and if you really want to mess up there heads snip a round kill a person or two if so and you die get a regular wepon for the next round and do what you going to do this will get them wondering about next round then you get your riffle..And don't listin to people a sniper riffle is a 1 shot kill yes that is if you aim at there chest or head thats all i aim for i shot wont kill anyone if you hit them in the leg or arm ect...one thing that makes a good sniper is team work talk to your team alot when your sniping just becouse you see 3 people running in your scope don't think your going to kill them all you need your team also tell them you got three guys running in what direction they are and then try to snip them off shot the last guy first then middle that way they don't know were your shooting from you could be behind them or on the side ect...main thing is to learn from every sniper you come across and use there skills in your own way and make somting new of it ...ECT ECT i can go on and on about snipping just go out there and have some fun... 1 big thing i learned to is don't snip laying down your shoot always never seem to hit what ever your laying on try snipping standing up or kneeling down this will also help your accuracy with the real riffle to becouse the crosshairs will be constantly moving...
your scope will always move as a sniper, but making that worse does not help, for it also bobbles up and down, left and right, making it trickier to get a shot, prone is better to stop that, and a good way to see that your shot wont miss is this. most people shoot objects in the way, roof, ground, etc. if you see that little yellow dot around your crosshairs, it means something is between you and your target, then is the time to go crouch. if you snipe standing, then arent you more visable, if you are visible, are people gonna see you, avoid you, call you out to their snipers, or shooot you?!? of course they are
I've been using the Sr-25SD lately and i would like to recommend it to anyone who likes to use SD guns and likes to snipe. I don't see too many ppl use it. The gun only takes two shots to kill in the chest area and you can get caught with your rifle out and you can use the thing like a pistol. If you are good at headshots from a distance the you can take a couple of ppl out per round the only flaw is that a m82 or m40 will outzoom.
Do you guys have any tips on how to snipe in dark areas without thermal scope, cause without it i can't pick off a single guy
yep, don't look at your screen as a whole. look at certain points and shift your eyes looking for a change in color, and you will spot an outline.
Snipe from the most unexpected places. Good snipers always check the windows for easy kills on noobs looking around up there. I try to hide somewhere with weird angles, so its not a straight shot to see me.

Be aware of other snipers!! If you're playing a team of 8, chances are, there will be at least one sniper on their side. Know where the good spots are for the other team and put something between you and the opposing sniper or just take him out before he sees you, but remember, theres no hiding from a thermal.

When your running around make sure you are using your pistol...even if you have a SASR or SR-25. Take your time shooting...when I run around and jsut start firing away as fast I can... I die, but when I take my time and hit them in the head or the chest they go down twice as fast and I barely lose any health. Just make sure you take aim!!!!!

1) Shoot To Kill. When you shoot, make sure your cross hairs are zoomed in to the peak. When your crosshairs are zoomed farther in the shot is more accurate. If you shoot and miss then u just basically yelled out your position to the enemy.

2) Timed Shots. Make sure your timing is right. When your scoping out a moving target aim your crosshairs a few feet ahead of his destination. Wait for him to make his way into the cross and fire, no hesitation. The good thing about this is if u miss he has already made it to that alley or cover of some sort and can't trace your shot back to u.

3) Repeating. When you kill an enemy one round then there's a high chance he will try to sneak up on you or get a quick shot off. If your a great sniper this may not be such a problem, but it would for the first time snipers. So make sure you have a strategy before entering a room. you need alot of sniping spots and use them accordingly, never snipe in the same place more than twice in a row.

4) Close Quarter Combat. Make sure you definately have a good back up pistol. Get used to different pistols and find your favorite for both SEAL and Terrorist. Personally, I like the SP-10 for the SEAL and the DE .50 for the Terrorists. The use of these pistols is when your man to man and your enemy has himself an automatic. Take high powered pistols like the Mark 23 /SD or SP-10 for SEALS and DE .50 and 226 for Terrorists.

5) Backup Buddy. When sniping your not goint to be able to see anyone behind you, so keep a backup buddy to watch behind you and keep the area clear. If you are alone and theres no one to watch your back then a Proximity Mine will be a perfect backup buddy. If you don't have PMN Mines then basically don't stay in one place for too long.

6) Use of Thermal. Thermal scopes arent very useful when sniping considering the fact that their range is only 80 yards. I never use thermal unless the map is pitch black. So use thermal accordingly.

7) Basic Tips. Your basic stats about each rifle. M87ELR- Strong, 1 shot kill, long range, loud, only accurate when accurate scoped. M82A1A- Strong, 1 shot kill, long range, loud, only accurate when scoped. SR-25/SD- Medium, 2-3 shot kiill, long range, loud w/o SD quiet w/ SD, accurate.. SASR- Medium, 2-3 shot kill, long range, loud, accurate. M40A1- Weak, 3-4 shot kill, lobg range, loud, very accurate. Kinda like a 30-06, your everyday hunting rifle.

GENERAL TIPS

* play!!! that's the most important thing you can do. learn the maps.

* tweak your controller. get all of the configs the way you want them. that way you'll be comfortable while playing.

* learn how to communicate! use your teammates to the fullest degree. you may play in a room where the guys don't communicate but keep talkin', and most of the time it catches on. but always let your team know where you are if you see any "tangos". it really helps.

* use cover!!! remember you are a seal (or a terrorist)...be sneaky for crying out loud. running striaight towards the enemy is never a good tactic. in other words play smart.

* RELAX...it's only a game.

Movement and Cover - learn how to move from rock to rock, bush to bush in as little exposed time as possible: if you're getting shot, mash down triangle to DIVE behind cover

Concealment and Camoflauge - learn which stance to use when, and what kinds of bushes provide the best cover for a situation. This also involves picking an appropriate uniform for the mission. Some of the colors don't quite match the environment.

Supporting Fire and Advancing - learn to use support gunners against enemy positions to help move your forces into position to make the kill.

Note:

Some SEALS came into the bomb room on one of the jungle night breach maps. I was the last guy alive. I proned and used the color pattern of the floor, which matched my character's clothing. A SEAL ran up within 6 feet of me without seeing me. I popped out and shot him with my silenced 552. He didn't even fire his gun. Unfortunately, I charged at the other SEAL after dispatching the first, and got myself killed. You can see the value of careful camoflauge and planning through this.

Team work is the most important thing in basically any game. It's a lot harder to stop an entire seal team that works together than 4 seperate rogue guys. That's why clan games are so freaking awesome. The better the clan the better the tactics and stuff. I haven't been online with Socom 2 yet cuz I don't have broadband yet ( November 2. I think I read that there is a spectator mode though. If you can get in one of those just watch key players and learn how to cover fire and where to flash certain areas. Just like echo said "play". You'll learn

He grenades are good for blowing up close quarter things.. like inside buildings cause its just a huge but small area effect explosion. m67 grenades are good for outside cause the area effect is greater.. if a frag hits u then u get hurt really bad or die. its harder to kill in wide open area with a HE. If u want to get better than just keep playing online... this will increase your effectiveness singleplayer and multi. practice makes perfect.
camo is the best weapon u have. Last night I played foxhunt as a seal, I ran to a big vally of brush and dove, waiting for the terr. 3 ran buy together within a foot of me, not even looking back. After they ran by i stood up and took out all three with a suppressed auto. I love steath.
1.What I sometimes do is shoot and take cover, then wait until they pass by me and shoot them again in the back. You are unseen and it takes their health down in two steps.

2.Use the leaning to the left and right. You have more cover than they do.

3.Your gun won't hit dead in the centre of your crosshairs. That pixel isn't where the bullets will hit. If they are in that circle NEAR the centre pixel it will. So don't take a second in getting your aim in.

4.SHOOT! SHOOT! and SHOOT!
If you see a head sticking out... fire! You'll think you can't hit him from that far... you'll be surprised. And if you see someone taking cover... shoot their cover. Fire a few bullets and wait untill they jump out because they think your reloading, then bang.

5. Wait but don't camp. From the second you move you could be marked. Use cover, don't just run. Move in and out of the trees, slowly! Move and then wait a second then go.

another useful tactic is not to go haywire when you see an enemy run past you. When i first began playing the game, i was so hell-bent on making my first kill, i would spring up and unload as many magazines as i could if an enemy passed by me without noticing.

NEVER do that on multiplayer, i found out, because usually while you are going all haywire trying to shoot the guy, he has already turned around and shot you in the head because you were senslessly waving your crosshairs around shooting, almost 100% sure you had him. I usually just jump up real quick and pop a few shots into his back, not even wasting but maybe three bullets...and that works.
First of all, if you a player like me, you are constantly looking around and observing your surroundings. I never, for more than 30 seconds, ESPECIALLY when i am in enemy territory, not know what is behind me. If someone is following you, even if they are not, always turn around or glance back to see if anyone is doing that 'follow the kill' type deal.

also, if you follow someone for a lengthly period of time, you are bound to be spotted by another enemy player. In turn, he will most likely shoot at you, and you may turn to fire back, but at the same time your easy kill has turned around and began shooting at you, also.

(i would only do the 'follow the kill' if he was the last person on their team left, and you had at least one other person to finish him off on your team)

reloading is a big disadvantage. use this against your a target, fake a reload to bring your opponent out of his cover.

choose your weapons wisely and know there advantages. range has alot to do in many boards.

When you engage a moving target, don't strafe all over the place unless you have to dodge their shots. Even if your crosshairs are right on them you will only hit about 10% of the time because you're moving so much.

If you catch someone running towards you, guns blazing, go prone, track them with your crosshairs, and pull the trigger in short bursts. You usually have a LOT of time to take them out, simply because they're running full tilt.

It should only take 3 bullets to the chest with an m4a1sd to put someone down.

On satchel missions, if you are the terroists, wait until a SEAL picks up the satchel and is killed, locate the satchel and lay PMN mines in all four directions, get to a position where you can watch over and snipe at the satchel and wait for the fire works. Be sure to notify your team of the mines though.

While hiding in cover that is impossible to see through in third person view, try switching to first person. It seems common sense but a lot of people won't do it.

Be wary of trying to shoot over railing, a lot of times I have been killed because I couldn't shoot over railing.

If you have a good peg on an enemy but don't want to risk a fire fight, always remember frag grenades, they are very useful tools.

Listen to your surroundings, bushes rustling, water splashing, all kinds of sound effects let you know that the enemy is coming.

If you are on a mission with a source of water, laying PMN mines below the surface of the water is an effective method of camoflauging the mines, this also a useful tactic when you are a terrorist and the SEALs try to bring the VIPs down the river...I forgot the level name.

Use your surroundings to your advantage. Among brush and ground coverage, shadows are an often overlooked advantage. On missions like firefight where the SEALs are decked out in black, they are almost invisible if they hide in the tunnels in the shadows.

The only glitch that I take advantage of that I don't see a major problem with is the 3rd Person Night Vision glitch. The fact is, on levels like Shadow Falls or Rat's Nest, it is impossible to survive long without it. Everyone knows about it and everyone takes advantage of it. Another interesting note on the same line is that if you are in Third Person Night Vision and you man a turret, you will have third person Heat Sensors....but your field of view is actually more limited this way.

If you see or hear incoming grenades and don't think you can run out of the area in time, go prone. More often than not, being prone will do less damage to you from grenades. I survived grenades landing almost right next to me being prone, where if I'm standing I'll die from a frag that seemed like it landed on the other side of the map
use the 3rd person view to your advantage, to look around corners and stuff like. It might not be like that in real life but it doesnt matter because this is just a video game.

1. Take of freggin vibration. It's alot easier to get a good shot at someone when your controller isnt vibrating. If u really want to feel your gameplay, buy a good audio system and turn up the woofer.

2. When trying to throw grenades far away, get into stand stance. Your grenades will now fly alot further. And go into crouch stance when trying to throw them nearby.

3. For heaven's sake THROW GRENADES! If you know someone is on a rooftop or soemthing, but u can't see them, unload all your freggin grenades at them! If u managed to miss u atleast succeded in knocking them over or something, or maybye even just managed to get them scared.

4. Stay calm. Going insane in Socom is a bad idea. When your angry you think with teh emotional side of your head.

5. Think before everything you do. If your a man less then the other team rushing may not be a good idea, or if the team is sniping running into the field guns a'blazing is also a bad idea. Just think of everything that can go wrong.

6. Always watch your back. when camping or sniping try to go somewhere with a wall to your back.

7. Turn up your volume! In certain maps audio is key. In frostfire it uselful for telling if someone is on the water towers, or on sujo its usefull to here if someone is approaching the base, also if u suspect your being fallowed dive down and listen. If u here footsteps turn around and fire. your enemy will probably be surprised, and will get over confident... so chances are you'll kill him.

8. As everyone has said, learn the maps. It's usefull to know where popular camping spots are when your playing one on one, its also usefull to go toplaces people always forget about. For instance, the tower in the corner of frostfire, the building near the extraction on foxhunt and so on.

9. Vary your strategy, never ever do anything under any circumstance more then 2 rounds in a row. People figure out your strategy and will get you after that. A good strategy is to do the same thing for two rounds, then the 3rd round do something to watch over where u were the last to rounds. It;s funny to imgaine the persons reaction when your not there and he just got sniped in the back. People will probably be like o hes there again... and run there 2.

10. The best tip for getting better would be to learn how to properly evaluate what you did wrong, and then take the nessecary messures to correct it. Learn your week-points and work at fixing them. For instance, if you find that your bad at close combat, it's probably cuz your bad at getting your crossare over your oppenent and shooting under pressure. So to fix this problem do what I did, take a gun, and limit it to single fire. Then rush the enemy. It may sound like suicide, but it was the only way for me to figure out how to aim and all that. If your a bad sniper, grab a sniper rifle and try sniping on a map like fish hook, or frostfire. Bringing things to the extreme will help you when it's easier.

11. Remember those maps you hate, you probably hate them because you can't do one of the maps attributes, heres a list i worked out, and i don't care if u agree with it. It states why you probably hate a map. I'm just listing a few so you get an idea.

Fox Hunt: Bad Accuracy abilities, Bad sniping abilities, Bad Hiding abilities, Bad protecting abilities

Desert Glory: Bad close combat abilities, Bad sniping abilities, Bad finding cover abilities, Bad grenade skills

FrostFire: Bad close combat abilities, Bad grenade skills

Crossroads: Bad close combat abilities, bad breach abilities, bad finding cover abilities,

Blizard: Bad close combat abbilites, Bad finding cover abilities, bad breach abilities, Bad sniping abilites...

And so on.

My last tip is that practice makes perfect, and you can read all the tutorials you want, but you wont get any better until you truly practice it.

veil's tip: communication is key to your team being sucessful. If you know where a sniper is...don't be a ninny, tell your team mates so they can frag his *censored*. If you know where your opponet's are camping and where, report it. And finally, before you plant mines, tell your friggin team where you plant them..the last thing you want to do is be walking around worrying if you are about to step on a mine
make sure u play some resawns, so u get good with aiming ( respawns don't hut rank or help) so play them, get use to the level, and best of all, have fuin with it, don't get all serious or the game will become *censored*, just stay cool, and u will get goood
So many snipers.... try getting REALLY good with a sp-10 for seals and deagle for ts, then u can snipe and not worry so much about close quarter luck
If you're a terrorist or a seal and you're not near any of the Seal breach areas, here's a tip for knowing where they are when the C4 blows. When the game announcer says:
"The perimeter has been breached by the seals." It is the breach by the turret.

"The seals have breached the perimeter". It is the center breach.

"A successful breach has been reached by the seals". It is the breach by the rocky hills.

Hope this helps.

AGAIN, I DID NOT WRITE ANY OF THESE TIPS

Props go out to everyone who wrote thses. If you know something that isn't posted here, post it, and i'll put it in.

I will post my own tips as I become more expierenced, i've only been playing for a month or so, and still am doing alot of messing up.

OK, here are my tips personally that I find work.

Know which guns your good with.

I see alot of people who do really good with an M4A1 but they think the M14 is more powerful so they take that gun and suck. If your good with a gun, stick with it.

Find which situations your most comfortable in.

I find getting someone or even 2 or 3 people in a long fire fight is to my advantage. I'm more comfortable dodging and shooting from a distance becuase I know I can kill at least 1 or 2 of them before getting killed.

Don't be afraid of dieing!!!

This is something I just realized. Ever noticed how you can go into a respawn server and get MVP every single time without any trouble? Then you get into a regular Suppression game at Vigilance and go 1-8? Do not be afraid of dieing. This is something that i've noticed personally, is that when i'm scared about dieing, i'll usually screw up some how, but if I don't care, i'll take down 2 or 3 of them before I go down

WOW, hardknocklife50 did some nice work in finding out how many shots with certain guns take someone down

Quote:
THIS IS FOR EVERYBODY THAT COMPLAINS ABOUT THE GUNS THE SEALS GUNS BEING BETTER OR THE TERRORISTS OR WHATEVER! SO WHAT I DID WAS CONDUCT A TEST, I USE ALL OF THE SEALS GUNS AND
ALL OF THE TERRORISTS GUNS AND I WROTE THE RESULTS! NOW THIS TEST IS BASED ON POWER(HOW MANY HITS TO DIE).THE STIPULATIONS WERE:

1. THE GUNS WERE FIRED ON SINGLE SHOT OR ONE SHOT AT A TIME

2. THE SHOTS WERE FIRED EVERY 2-3 SECONDS

3.THE DISTANCE WAS ABOUT 5-10(CLOSE RANGE) AWAY IN SOCOM FEET

4. THE AREAS SHOT WERE THE CHEST,STOMACH, LEG(UPPER AND MIDDLE THIGH), AND THE BACK(UPPER).

5. THERE WAS NO LAG AND THE OPPONENT WAS NOT MOVING!

6. AND I TESTED THE GUNS NUMEROUS TIMES! FOR EX: I SHOT THE GUY WITH THE M14 IN THE CHEST 2-3 TIMES BEFORE I WROTE THE RESULTS TO MAKE SURE IT WAS ACCURATE!

Dunno where you've been, but your unable to do that glitch now...

GJ otherwise though, you've covered most of it...

If you would actually read, these tips were from the start of Socom 2, 'till right now.

Nice job putting this together...I have to disagree with some of the weapons and number of shots, though...I have killed someone standing still with two shots to the chest with the HK5K.

I pointed my friends here, and they had trouble finding a bunch of tips, so I just took every tip I could find and put them together in one huge thread for EZ reference
