Gun Shopping...
I know this sounds psycotic but I assure you its not. Ive been around guns for a while (have no fear, im SCSCA certified)...Anyways, im interested in getting a handgun for personal protection/target recreation... I did a little shopping the other day and found a 1911 (.45) that was relatively inexpensive. It is made by a newer company, not colt, so its very basic- not flashy at all.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a somewhat starter pistol or where to look for one?

Does this 1911 sound like an accident waiting to happen?

If this is any help here you go. I currently carry A Glock Model 27 which is a sub-compact .40. It is small light-weight on fits snug in my hand. A glock is a very simple handgun to break down, clean, and operate. It does have quite a bit of recoil because of the caliber and short barrel.

I also have a Rock Ilsand Armory .45. It is designed off a mil-spec 1911. It is heavy and has no safety. The weight helps control the recoil and is fairly accurate.

My wife carries a Smith and Wesson .357 mag revolver. I suggest a wheel gun for anybody that has limited knowledge of guns. It is very simple to operate and hardley ever jams.

Depending on what caliber you feel comfortable with, there are many gun makers who make dependable guns at half the price of a glock. I just prefer the Glocks because of there proven reliability.

I would not carry a 1911 because of the size. Glock also makes a sub-compact .45 in two different versions. I believe the model numbers are 33 and 36. One has a double stacked mag, which makes the grip kind of thick, the other has a single stacked mag which is nice.

This is kind of a brisk statement but pm me or aim me. I also carry the glock 23 mid-size .40 on duty, but it is department issue.

Thanks man, Ill definetly send you a pm.

What about informative sites..etc Where should one look if interested in this sort of thing? Keep in mind that almost all of my gun knowledge is based on shotguns and sporting clays, so the different parts, calibers, etc.. seem a little confusing. What is all the talk about single action and double action?

Not to be advertising but go to www.ar15.com. It is a real informative site about any type of gun you need, including my favorite AR-15. Just go to the handgun section and read up.

Single action or double action? Well this refers to the action of the hammer. A single action in simple terms only has one stage of the hammer. Where a double action has two stages.

Now there are harmerless guns and guns with internal and external hammers. There is just to much information to elaborate on. Any other questions let me know.

I do suggest starting off with a 9mm for someone who has never owned a pistol just because of the low recoil. The low recoil improves accuracy and it also has plenty of stopping power. Just don't go with any lower caliber such as a .380 or .22. Just not enough punch.

Do Canadian police officers carry side arms or just night sticks? I didn't know if they had the same policy as the UK. If so what do they carry? Just wondering, Thanks.

well english constables only carry nightstick's, so their round belly, stupid hat, and english accent do most of the killing.
as for canadian policemen, they don't carry anything, they just borrow a hockeystick from an "innocent bystander."

question: is the bystander still innocent if his hockeystick kill's someone?

That's funny but I have heard of those crazy englishmen wailing there sticks like mad men. A hockey stick could ruins somebody's day. I guess.

We retired our full length batons and went to ASP expandable baton.

Like...yea....alotta people do

As for our Canadian Officers they do carry 9mm I think they mighta gotten better ones...im not so good with all the gun stuff...but yes they do carry them along with there handcuffs nightstick pepperspray flashlight bullets all that junk. The RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) kind of like the FBI of Canada, carry some sort of Shotgun in there police cruiser if they have one, (if they are a municipal unit) if not, then just their 9mm.
