Message Board Tutorial
Ok, I decided to make this thread so people can learn how to use some of the features on Socom-2.com. Things like quoting, deleting posts, searching, and more.

Searching

Before you click "New Topic," click "Search"! It's right up above at the top of the page. It's not the greatest search engine, but atleast give it a try. If you make a post and theres already one the exact same or very similar, some people like to go nuclear! Look at the benefits, a simple search can save you the hassle of having to type up a post and wait for a replies.

If you want to quote an entire post somebody made, simply click the "Quote" button in the top right corner of THEIR post. Once it brings up the reply box, put your cursor at the end of the quote, push enter twice, and type away.

To quote only a part of someones post, highlight what you want to quote and copy. Then click "Post Reply." In the reply box, paste the text, highlight again, and click the "Quote" button that is right under the "Subject" box. To add the name to the quote, do this:

Code:
[quote="insertnamehere"]Text to Quote[/quote]
Deleting Posts

Unless you are made a Moderator, you can only delete your own posts. To do so, once you have made the post, click the little "X" in the top right corner of YOUR post, right next to where it says "Quote" and "Edit." The reason you want to do this is because if you accidentally double post, you can fix it yourself. Only click the "Submit" button once when making a new topic or replying!

Editing Your Own Posts

The same with deleting posts goes here. You can only edit your own posts! In order to do this, once you have made a post, click the "Edit" button. It is located right next to "Quote" and "X". Then make any changes and click submit. One way to prevent yourself from having to use this button is to click "Preview" and make sure nothing is wrong with your post. "Preview" is conveniently located right next to the "Submit" button, so you can't miss it if you make are going to make a post.

Long URL's

Long URL's tend to make it really annoying to read a post. It causes you to have to scroll left and right, instead of only up and down. To do this, use this:

Code:
[url=putURLhere]Make a Title and put it here[/url]
An example of this is in my sig, it links you to a thread that tells you how to enter the chat room.

Posting Pictures

To post a picture, you must host it first. Go to a site, upload the image, copy the URL. Paste the link into your message, highlight it, and click "Img". It should look like this:

Code:
[img]Image URL Here[/img]
Here's a site recommended by xa for hosting images:
www.photobucket.com
or
Imageshack.us - where you can host without creating an account, and for free

Other Stuff

Bold - Bolding is very simple. To bold text, simply highlight it with the mouse, and click the " B " button located underneath the "Subject" bar.

Italics - Exact same as bolding, except rather than clicking the " B ", click the " i " button.

Underlining - Highlight text, click the " u " button.

Colouring - easier than Xa's....:

Lets say you want the colour red. You'd go
Code:
[color=red]Text Goes right here[/color]
You DO NOT go
Code:
[color=red][/color]Text here
To change colours, just see what colours there are and type that colour in instead of red.

Code:
[color=red]Blue(or whatever colour)[/color]
Red
Brown
Blue
And so on and so forth

I hope this is helpful. I know most of the more common members know how to use this, but I noticed a lot of the new ones don't seem to know. If I left something out, feel free to add it, if I screwed something up, feel free to kick my *** . I'm a n00b with this stuff, so I only went over the basics, then I got bored of typing it all up and decided to stop. Good luck.

Great work, Snoman... I'm certain that this information can be put to good use.

(At least, I am hoping that it will...)

Nice, also you can imbed code into other code for example:
Code:
[url=http://www.google.com][img]randompicture.com/picture[/img][/url]
would embed a picture as a link, basically a thumbnail.

Quoting
Generally this can be done by the quote button at the top right of the post, but if you find you need to do it manually:
Code:
[quote="persons name or place where this appeared"]The text you wish to copy so they know who your talking to[/quote]
Color
Color is easy enough. First you need to know a general color you want in hexadecimal form #FFFFFF this codes for white. OK to make it simpler ill write it as #RRBBGG . Basically the numbers in RR code for the Red strength, the numbers in BB code for Blue strength, and GG? Green strength. F is max, so FF means the strongest possible color in that color. 0 is 0, so 00 is the weakest. This is easy enough to mix your colors yourself, or you can use mspaint to do it. In MS paint go to Colors->Edit Colors->Define Custom colors. Then move the bar and dot around to the color you want, in the bottom right corner it will give you a number. First thing you must do is convert to hexadecimal(1-F). Go to Start->run and type in calc. First go to View-> Scientific. Type in your number, and click the hex circle above the left most column. That is your hex number. The actual code is:
Code:
[color=#HXDCML]Text in color[/color]
Or you can highlight the text and click font colour.
Signatures
Go into profile(at the top of the page, scroll down to where it says profile, and use an image or text or whatever. This will show after every post you make. for example my signature is:
Code:
[quote="Family Guy"]
Chris- Dad, what's a blowhole for?
Peter- Well, I could tell you what its NOT for, and why they wont let me back into seaworld...[/quote]
It's simple enough. Avatars are at the bottom, and to use on more than 9kb large, use something like photobucket.com to host them and use "Link to off-site Avatar"

Also on a side note, for the love of bikes, hockey, and captain crunch read the forum rules.

EDIT: I think he wants it stickied hint hint.

You got sticky'd! You told me you where making this in X-Chat sounded like a good idea and I came out great nice job, must have taken some time to put all together. I know there is a sticky for this but mabye you could add the link to the X-Chat sticky. Like you said we need more traffic in there.

I have little idea what you said. Are you trying to say that you can't type in your signature when you're making a post? You have to edit the signature from you profile.
