It's been confirmed that Brett Favre, whose alma mater is my university, will be on the cover of Madden 09. I'm really excited about it. It's awesome to know that one of the top-5 greatest quarterbacks of all time came from Southern Miss.

I guess now they are trying to avoid the madden curse by putting retired athletes on the cover now.

Does there really need to be a thread about this? I think every football fan knows where Favre comes from...

Ive just seen the cover of madden 09 on the xbox dashoard, and it looks like the most bland cover theyve had in a while.

Well it's a big deal because it's their only good player, ever.

Well we're certainly no USC or Michigan, putting out all-stars all the time. I mean, we're in the Conference USA. But can you say that (arguably) the best quarterback to ever play the game came from your school? Or that the only three time MVP ever in the NFL came from your school? We can. But we've had other good NFL players too. Michael Boley is the Falcon's best player right now, and Patrick Surtain has been a successful cornerback for years. Adalius Thomas came from Southern Miss also, and he's tearing it up in the NFL. And Ray Guy was one of the top 17 finalists this year for the NFL hall of fame.

I disagree with Brett Farve being the best QB of all time. I really think that belongs to Johnny Unitas.

Everyone's going to have their own opinion. That's why I said he's arguably the best. But he holds almost all of the important all-time quarterback records. Plus, he's the only player to EVER win the MVP award three times. Don't get me wrong, Unitas was good, but I wouldn't even put him above Elway, Marino, or Montana. But even though everyone has their own opinions, I will say that anyone would be CRAZY not to put Brett Favre in their top-five best quarterbacks of all time. I'm also a HUGE fan of Peyton Manning, who I honestly believe will end his career as being the best quarterback of all time.

I have a theory about the older players though... The game of football has evolved SO much over the years. Players now days are bigger and quicker, and the game has become more advanced because knowledge and schemes have evolved in the game. Defenses are SO much harder to play against now than they were years ago. So I'm much more impressed with a quarterback who can put up awesome stats now than a quarterback who put up awesome stats back in Unitas' day. And Favre could raise the level of the players around him better than any quarterback I've ever seen. But I think the older quarterbacks would have a much tougher time playing in today's game than in their day. But this is just my opinion, and my theory that I've developed.
