You are one of the very few that I've seen agree (or seem to agree) with the use of friend codes, or in general, limitations set forth by the company itself. It
does make perfect sense, but no one seems to realize that.
I also agree; the graphics were relatively outstanding, but they should never be one of the franchise's major selling points -- it's the gameplay!

You must have either a wireless router or a Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector which connects to your PC. You can also use a wi-fi "hot spot" found at various commercial locations, such as McDonald's. I think Starbucks provides wi-fi, but I've never been inside one. =)
