yeah, i download it earlier, nothing special really, just one of those safety updates, although supposedly online game play is supposed to be more stable

Yea, that's basically all it does. Here's a link:
PlayStation.Blog Firmware Update (v2.17)
There were rumors that it fixed compatibility issues in order to prepare for 'Home," but those have been going around ever since "Home" was delayed.

Also, a PS2 folder thingymajig was added to the Harddrive. People were thinking that they were adding PS2 games to the store, or doing something with the BC of the new models. But it is simply for data for games like FF11 that need the HDD.

It seems to me like the System Update also fixed the "mexican jumping bean" issue that used to be an issue on MLB'08: The Show... and by this, I am talking about the random chunks of dirt that would jump up and out of the ground around home plate.
When I played the game again today, I totally noticed the difference.

I also noticed a huge difference when playing COD4.
Instead of rooms being laggy or great, they are now just at one extreme connection-wise. Instead of the game lagging all over the place for the entire duration, the game just ends which I would rather see happen. The game is definitely more stable as the rooms crap out less.

The information bar is a lot easier for me to read now on my SD. Before I had to lean in and could barely read it.
