I'd still be calling their customer support line to find out WTF happened to your box... next thing you know, they might be sending you more than just one free month of XBL - like in my case, I was hooked up with way more than just one month of service.
All you have to do is be tactful (yet upset) when you are on the phone with you... sooner or later, you will have them eating out of the palm of your hand. I recommend using the word "unacceptable" many times when you're on the phone with them... I found it yielded great results.
