Bad box office sales blamed on Halo 3
It's been the worst October for North American movie ticket sales in years, and industry executives are pointing the finger at Master Chief.
Total cinema ticket sales in North America for the weekend of October 5 were a relatively meager $80 million--the worst results for an October weekend since 1999, reports Advertising Age.
Industry executives are wagging the finger at blockbuster game Halo 3, which was released in the US on September 26, made $170 million in its first day on sale, and at the last count, had made its creators Bungie and Microsoft more than $300 million.
But Bungie's gain is apparently the movie theatres' loss. Mike Hickey, an analyst at Janco Partners, commented, "The audience on this game is the 18-to-34 demographic, similar to what you'd see in cinemas. This could last for several weeks."
The Advertising Age article continues to warn that another box office drought may be ahead, as the release of Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto IV looms in the distance--current ETA the first quarter of 2008.

One thing that was incorrect was released on "September 26th"?

If everyone hates this game so much then how did this happen? I personaly don't like the game but I like sony over microsoft.

Interesting topic title, Sublime. I thought I had to come in here with my hammer of justice and beat you down a few pegs.

I actually never thought of this aspect. I haven't been to the movies in months, and I suppose Halo 3 does play a small role in this. To go as far as to post a press release blaming poor sales on a video game, I think it kind of pathetic. These are in two different fields of entertainment. Although it could very well have an effect on ticket sales, perhaps people aren't going to the theatres these past two weeks because everything out sucks. They just don't want to admit it. A good film would trump Halo 3 if people really cared about it. I am sure the players can find time to pry themselves off their games for 2-3 hours.

Actually no good movies have come to theatres for a long time, and with the same old **** playing nobody wants to go. Halo3 really isn't all that great, and even though millions of people play it (with a fraction playing it religiously), thats not going to make movie ticket sales decrease, it just depends on whats playing.

This is true. I haven't seen a movie (other than We Own the Night) on tv that I said "Wow, i should go see that". If there's nothing good to to go see, then why not stay home and play Halo?

Because when the game first game out people were so hyped about it. No one knew what to expect, how good the game would be, they just expected it to be really good. Kinda like when Socom 3 came out..then after it's out for people to learn everything and stuff, they realise it's a bad game. And all of those sales come before the time that people figure out that it's bad.

One word, OVERHYPED.

The game isn't even close to being as good as expected. I got tricked into the hype and bought the game myself. But now, does anyone want to buy it off of me??? There is absolutely nothing else to play right now. Oh god I can't wait for that Naruto game. Yah, I just said that.

Ever since release, you can see about a 75% decrease of players. Also, on the little map showing where most of the players are, every other country is dwindling expect for America. Not that many in Japan play it anymore, I was suprised with the amount when the game was first released.

Sorry but playing the same 3 maps in matchmaking gets boring. I also hate how sometimes you are being forced to play stupid ****** gametypes that those dimwits at bungie created. Oh, **** **** **** Territories, VETO THIS ****..........AHHH WTF NOW ODDBALL!!!!

That was the boiling point right there that made me return the game after 1 day. If we just want to play Deathmatch or Team Deathmatch mode only in Ranked, we should be allowed to do that. For some reason, after 5 years the guys at Bungie still dont understand this.

"ewww..lets put all kinds of other fruity gametypes in this game too...that'll be SUPER"
