The Canadian Press: Week in video-game news: 'Halo' team leaves Microsoft; Wii shortage continues

Week in video-game news: 'Halo' team leaves Microsoft; Wii shortage continues

News from the virtual world:
-BUNGIE JUMPS: It's always sad when a seemingly happy marriage breaks up. We still haven't got over Brad and Jen, and the split between Microsoft and Bungie Studios may be even more shocking.
Bungie - which Microsoft acquired in 2000 - is the developer of "Halo," by far the most lucrative franchise on the Xbox. "Halo 3" pulled in more than $300 million during its first week in stores, and drove a surge in Xbox 360 sales. When word got out last week that Bungie would be leaving Microsoft, the big question was: Why?
"Bungie is like a shark," founder Jason Jones said. "We have to keep moving to survive. We have to continually test ourselves, or we might as well be dolphins. Or manatees."
Microsoft Game Studios vice-president Shane Kim kept a stiff upper lip, saying, "We are supporting Bungie's desire to return to its independent roots." Microsoft will hold a minority stake in Bungie, and the studio will work on future projects within the Microsoft-owned "Halo" universe. Bungie President Harold Ryan said it will continue to develop games exclusively for the Xbox 360 and Windows PCs "for the foreseeable future."
-RARE BIRD: Thinking about getting the kids a Wii for Christmas? Better start shopping now. Nearly a year after its debut, Nintendo's distinctive console is still hard to find. "We're working very hard to make sure that consumers are satisfied this holiday," Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime told the San Jose Mercury News, "but I can't guarantee that we're going to meet demand. As a matter of fact, I can tell you on the record we won't."
Fils-Aime said the shortage isn't the result of production problems. "Every time we put more into the marketplace, we sell more," he said.
Perhaps you already own a Wii and your problem is that you just can't hold onto the remote. Your prayers have been answered: Nintendo is now offering the Wii Remote Jacket, a rubbery doohickey that wraps around the controller to give you a better grip. The jacket will be included with all future Wiimotes; you can also get one from The Official Nintendo Homepage, featuring Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day, DK: Jungle Climber, Drawn to Life, Chibi-Robo: Park Patrol, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.
-AY, CARAMBA. Electronic Arts' forthcoming "The Simpsons Game" features an assortment of video-game parodies, such as "Medal of Homer" and "Neverquest." But some companies, apparently, can't take a joke.
"I was always under the impression that when you do parody, it's a sign of respect," "Simpsons" designer Greg Rizzer told the Web site CVG. "If we make fun of 'Grand Theft Auto,' we're not going to hurt the sales of 'Grand Theft Auto.' ... But yeah, we've definitely had some reactions - we've had to pull stuff from the game."
On the other hand, the creators of "Guitar Hero" appreciated the tribute. "I don't know if you've seen 'Sitar Hero,"' Rizzer said. "The guys from Harmonix loved it and we sent them 20 copies of the poster."

I'm pretty sure there won't be a Halo for PS3, although there would be so much more they could have done with it, graphics and gameplay wise. They would probably end up making a different game series. But they will always be know as the Halo creators.

MS owns all rights to Halo. Bungie will still have a majority of their games published by MS.
Will be awhile before we see a Bungie game for PS3.
No Halo for PS3 though, NEVER.

I would bet my life on the fact that you'll never see a halo on the playstation platform, or wii for that matter. Its an IP owned by MS and the last time i checked MS has all the leverage.

The real question is do you think if they made halo for ps3 and xbox would they lose money or gain? Because thats probably why they would "divorce" xbox.

Halo for DS was once in development...but they stopped for whatever reason. I saw a video of it and it didn't look all that great, but then again how could it be good when there's only 4 buttons on a DS?

theres no way they broke up with msoft for the reason that they were SO desperate to release halo on ps3. I mean it MAY have made sense on the ps2 with its huge install base but no way on ps3. Im pretty sure i read somewhere its not coming on ps3. bungie is likely to make a couple of different games for ps3 and wii although i think the majority will be for the 360

This says it all, right there. Don't expect any Wii or PS3 games from them anytime soon.
You'll never see Halo on anything but Microsoft stuff... Bungie made the game, but MS owns it and the license... Therefor Bungie CANNOT release Halo on anything, they just make the games, they don't own the rights to it. So for it to be on another platform, big brother MS would have to give the o.k. Which they obviously never would.

Bungie will not be releasing Halo on any other console. Microsoft owns the rights to the Halo franchise. Bill Gates isn't rich because he's stupid. He wouldn't let the number one console game franchise in the world spread to Sony.

As part of this transaction, Bungie and Microsoft have forged a deep and long-term development and publishing relationship focused on the continued success of the “Halo” franchise. It is also the intent of both parties to expand their partnership to include new IP created and owned by Bungie.
Bungie’s critically acclaimed Xbox 360® exclusive “Halo 3” achieved $300 million in global sales in its first week. Released on Tuesday, Sept. 25, “Halo 3” is the fastest-selling video game ever and already one of the most successful entertainment properties in history.
“This exciting evolution of our relationship with Microsoft will enable us to expand both creatively and organizationally in our mission to create world-class games,” said Harold Ryan, studio head for Bungie. “We will continue to develop with our primary focus on Microsoft’s platforms; we greatly value our mutually prosperous relationship with our publisher, Microsoft Game Studios, and we look forward to continuing that affiliation through ‘Halo’ and beyond.”
“Working with Microsoft was great for us, it allowed us to grow as a team and make the ambitious, blockbuster games we all wanted to work on. And they will continue to be a great partner. But Bungie is like a shark. We have to keep moving to survive. We have to continually test ourselves, or we might as well be dolphins. Or manatees,” said Jason Jones, Bungie founder and partner.
Bungie’s management retained the services of Don Leeds, senior managing director of B-Hive Global, LLC, to spearhead the structuring of the deal and negotiate on their behalf. Bungie will remain in Kirkland, Washington, and is always looking to hire excellent talent.
