Dog gets medal for saving kids - Yahoo! News

WELLINGTON (AFP) - Nine-year-old Jack Russell terrier George is being honoured with a posthumous bravery medal for saving five New Zealand children from an attack by two pitbulls.

The medal from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) comes after US Vietnam veteran Jerrell Hudman said he was sending his Purple Heart medal to George's owner after hearing of the dog's bravery.

George, who had a heart problem, won fame after defending five children from the pitbulls in the small North Island town of Manaia a week and a half ago. The two pitbulls rushed at the five children on the street, prompting George to charge the much larger dogs as the children escaped.

The Jack Russell was badly mauled by the two pitbulls and later had to be put down because of his extensive injuries. The two pitbulls were also put down.

The SPCA medal is usually awarded to people for their bravery in defending animals.

"George was a very brave little dog who almost certainly prevented severe injury, if not death, to at least one of the children," SPCA chief executive Robyn Kippenberger said.

"It's truly tragic that he paid with his own life for his instinctive act of courage."

Hudman, 58, of Austin, Texas was a US Marine for 30 years and said he decided to send his Purple Heart to George's owner Alan Gay after reading the news on the Internet because the dog was "a little warrior".

The Purple Heart is awarded to those killed or injured fighting for the US military.
Even though it was dogs doing the attacking aswell, that "little warrior" is the ultimate proof that dogs are much better then cats. You never read any stories about cats saving five children.

Well, it goes to show you that dogs are cool.

I mean really, this isn't total proof. I mean think about it. Dogs are the natural predators of cats, it's in their right to run away.

Then you think, have you ever heard of a CAT trying to ATTACK five kids. I didn't think so.

We have a pitbull that is a big wimp. A complete *****, I mean, he wouldn't hurt a fly. Well, Mom and I was were walking one night when 3 guys were approaching towards us. I wasn't thinking nothing about them because it was cold and dark that night. Naveah was doing his business, and out of nowhere, this dog got fierce. The 3 guys were about 10 ft away, when he started going nuts, barking like i've never heard him bark before.

Now I don't know if he sensed danger, But I damn well Know I couldn't take on 3 dudes with my mom right there. For that I love my dog, I kinda wish I would've let him go to see what he would've done.

I prefer my dog over my cat, but that's probably because my cat is old, fat, and bites me all the time.

My Cat, Nathan Jr. ( Named after Raising Arizona ) is wicked smart and turns on the Kitchen sink when he's thirsty and if interrupted will go all Mountain Lion on you.

I've been thinking about getting a Jack Russel just because of how smart they are. But, I don't know if my mellow self can handle the Hyperactivity. I found a Boxweiler puppy a couple of weeks ago that I named Beelo but thge owners ended up claiming him. He seemed pretty smart, I was sad to see him go.

yeah, a cat would much rather take pleasure in seeing you mauled than helping you out. hell, they would probably help the dogs after they leave and maul you some more.

i salute this little Jack Russel.

I defend the cats honor, before any dog got a medal for warding off two pit bulls the story of Faith should get the honor of being among the first.

The following story is about the first cat to ever receive decorations for courage.

One of the most famous cats was one who lived through the London air raids of the Second World War, a small female tabby and white called Faith. She had walked into St Augustine's Church, in Watling Street as a stray kitten, and as she was never claimed and would not leave, the Rector took her to live in the Rectory house adjoining the Church.

In September 1940, Faith had a black and white kitten called Panda, and the two of them were comfortably installed on the top floor of the Rectory house. Later that month, however, the cat became restless and agitated and went on a tour of inspection of the rest of the house, eventually taking the kitten out of the basket and installing it in a room three floors below at the other side of the house.

When the Rector found the empty basket he searched for the cats and took them upstairs. Faith at once seized the kitten and took it downstairs again. The Rector took the kitten upstairs four times and then gave up the struggle.

Three nights later the blitz began and a bomb went through the roof of the Rectory House, which blazed and crumbled. The Rector returned to find his house a mass of burning ruins, but in spite of firemen saying it was hopeless he started to search for the cat.

He called Faith several times, never expecting an answer, but to his relief he heard a faint cry from the smouldering ruins in answer. Peering down he saw the brave little cat sitting there entirely hemmed in by rubble. She was serene and unafraid, and had the kitten between her paws. He hacked a passage out of the debris and then coaxed the cat and her kitten out. Both were begrimed but unhurt.

Faith was taken to the Church vestry just before the whole Church house collapsed in ruins. There she stayed and calmly settled down with Panda her kitten, knowing they were safe, which indeed they were, as the Church was not hit. Faith was the first cat to win decorations for the courage she showed during that dark time in history.

Just because you have a biased opinion towards dogs doesn't mean you have to disrespect cats just to fuel your ego -.-

There really is no limit to your awesomeness, is there?

Cats > Dogs because you don't have to walk them, and you don't see stupid women driving their cats around, or carrying their cats around.

Dogs eat their own poop. I've seen it first hand. I also saw the same dog vomit up the poop, and, eat it again.

I used to walk a dog for my nieghobrs, and it was the dumbest dog I have ever seen in my life.

After it would poop, it would do everything in it's power to eat that poop. It seemed to especially like it when it was nice and creamy. All I did was make sure that dog never licked me. NEVER!
