Yeah, they said they were putting linux on it a while ago.

For all you people complaining about a 600 dollar PS3:

YOU'D HAVE TO BE RETARDED TO BUY THAT UNLESS YOU HAVE THE NEED FOR THE 4 OR 5 EXTRA FEATURES ON IT.

The low end model will have everything needed to play any playstation game on it, online or off. Do you really need 40 extra gigabytes, wi-fi, and HDMI? If so, then this counsle if for you. But how many people really need all that? Very few. You can use a component cable for high def, use a usb to transfer your memory card saves to and from the ps3, and wi-fi dosent look to be a big selling point either.

Just buy the $500, jeeze.

I do believe you can play on the net on a wireless network, but don't quote me on that.

If you can, then that's great because I can sell my D-Link to my friend who is willing to give me $75 for it, PS3 game!

For the PS3 online setup, will it be wireless internet only or can I still use my cable internet?

I just want to know if I can keep my cable internet or if I need wireless.

TGS 2006: Sony Unveils PS3 Dashboard, Browser

PS3 - TGS 2006: Sony Unveils PS3 Dashboard, Browser

Following Ken Kutaragi's disappointing keynote (they ended with a video of Afrika -- enough said), 1UP and other media were invited to a separate, smaller meeting at their Tokyo offices where Sony's president of Worldwide Studios Phil Harrison allowed us an early look at PlayStation 3's dashboard and a few of the multimedia features that will be included within the interface.

The interface was described by Harrison as "too early" to release screen shots, however, so you'll have to rely on our descriptions for now. As expected, the interface is very much like the one you'll currently find on PSP but more refined, polished and updated.

First off, photos. Xbox 360 allows for a slideshow gallery accompanied by music, but PS3's is a little more ambitious, allowing you to manipulate the pictures in a variety of ways (similar to Wii's approach). For example, one of the filters made the images appear as though they were printed on paper. Mr. Sam Kennedy was in attendance during the presentation, describing the filter as "pretty slick." You're pretty slick yourself, Sam-o.

Also included is a music player with a generic light show playing over. Otherwise, it's pretty straightforward. More interesting was the web browser (which, unlike Nintendo's version of Opera, appears to be free) demonstration, where Harrison opened multiple windows -- in this case, the PlayStation.com home page, Google and a few others -- and flipped through them in a tab-like fashion (think tabbed AIM windows) very quickly.

Official: PS3 Will Ship Without HDMI Cable

PS3 - Official: PS3 Will Ship Without HDMI Cable

Today a startling new piece of information about the PS3 was released on the official website. if you go to the questions part and where it says "what is HDMI?", the answer says what it is and what it can be hooked up to, but in the fine print on the bottom it says "HDMI Cable not included".

Sony has been saying the benefits and features of HDMI on the PS3 ever since it was announced at last years E3, but even the critics said that it would cost more money, and it would be better for everyone, so that they wouldn't all have to buy a TV with HDMI to play their PS3 on. However, it only states the american versions will not ship with one, because its only on the US website that it says HDMI cable bot included. Most likely all versions of the PS3 will include either the HD AV cable that the Xbox 360 shipped with, or just the standard AV plug-ins.

So does this mean full Internet access?!

If it does, that's just sweet. Today I was thinking, news computer, or a PS3? Looks like I'm killing two birds with one stone, or a few hundred dollar bills.

Did anyone else see this on the Playstation website?

So we can have 7 controllers running at the same time?! 7 player split screen? WOW!

I don't think that's a good idea, but if you hook up multiple TVs then that's sweet!

How cool would it be if we had total full Internet access (like on a computer) and can download AIM and basically everything you could on a computer? If you already can, then there's no question left for me, I am buying this thing ASAP.

I was watching something on G4 a few days ago (I think) and it announced what was coming with the PS3 when you purchase it.

This was announced for only the Japan versions, the US content with the PS3 hasn't been specified yet.

Content:
Controller
A/V Cable (Not HDMI cable!)
USB Cable
Ethernet Cable
maybe some other stuff?

Sorry for the lack of detail, I only remember those few things, but they are really the only important ones. I'm not sure if it finalised because I cant find it anywhere online, but I heard it on a quick news update on G4.

I think its cool you get a USB and Ethernet cable with it. I believe the USB one is used mainly to charge the controller, and the Ethernet is just a nice added bonus.

Looks like they are heading for an "out of the box" and "Internet ready" console. Pretty cool.
