After really liking and playing the hell out of the first Scene It game last year, I downloaded the Box Office Smash demo from XBL the other day... after just my first playthrough, I am really looking forward to the new dashboard update coming up in a few weeks. After what I read on the game, it's supposed to be the first game out there that will utilize the avatars. Needless to say, I am hoping that my wife buys me this game for my birthday this year... after all, it was she who got me the first game as a gift last year on my birthday.
Here's the basic writeup of the game, which I just read over at IGN...
Who doesn't like trivia-based board games? Moreover, who doesn't like movie trivia-based videogames? All the fun without the cleanup, right? Microsoft is hoping that everyone likes the latter as they're bringing Scene It? Box Office Smash to the masses at the end of October. It contains a slew of new questions, question types and HD (and SD) movie clips as well the much sought-after ability to download new questions via Xbox Live. I got the chance to play a few games of Scene It? at a Microsoft hands-on event recently and found the game to bring back fond memories of the first.
The setup is basically identical. You and up to four players sit on your couch, tub of popcorn in one hand and last year's greatest E3 announcement (the Big Button Pad) in the other and answer questions about a bunch of movies. It's fun, simple and a great addition to a party. There are 1,800 all-new questions and new movie clips to go along with them.
The few games that I played showcased a couple of the 22 new question types. One was a slow crawl of actor and character names. Players had to buzz in and guess the movie before time ran out. Another question type showed the game drawing a sketch of a scene and players had to buzz in when they knew what movie it was taken from. The next question was setup with a crossword puzzle with the center spaces being the movie title and the branching horizontal words being the clues.
Some question types (though not the questions themselves) did make the transition to the second Scene It? game. One traditional question type played a lengthy clip of a film that was followed by a group of four questions. Pretty standard stuff.
The only real deviation to the standard Scene It? gameplay that Box Office Smash brings to the table are with the online interactions. Avatars are coming with the New Xbox Experience on November 19 and Scene It? is the first game to utilize them. The cute little digital representations are all over Scene It? but since the game ships a few weeks before the update, players will have settle for eight generic Avatars until the update launches when they'll be able to create their own.
Xbox Live multiplayer is also new to Box Office Smash. Up to four players can now link up and play against each other, but don't expect to find any change to the typical Scene It? gameplay. Of course, online functionality opens the doors to downloadable content. We recently learned that the first dose of DLC is planned for award season in February when we'll get around two hundred or so award-themed questions and a few new avatars as well. No word yet on pricing or subsequent downloadable packs.
Scene It? Box Office Smash appears to be just as fun as the original. It was a little disconcerting that I saw one of the same movie clips that I saw at E3 a few months ago, but I'll chalk it up to luck for now.
Xbox Live multiplayer is also new to Box Office Smash.
YES !
Sign me up for this. Last years Christmas present to myself was Scene It. It helped me get past the awkward , annoying, visitation of Family Squares and Infidel Invaders on Christmas Day. Sadly, I never played much after that and I've wanted to. The new and much needed multiplayer aspect of it is going to be a blast. Had MP been on last years Scene It I would probably still be playing it today.
I know one thing for sure... I am totally going to dominate other people that I face in multiplayer once I get this game. The only thing that I find wrong with the demo is the fact that the game seems really short. But what can one expect when the file size is only something like 450MB?
It should be a really good game... mainly because it's putting the new features of Xbox Live to good use, right out of the box.
I typically know the answers to SceneIt but I am just really slow at answering them. Like, slow motion slow. I will get this though... the demo was fun... as long as the questions don't repeat themselves too much though. That is when SceneIt starts to suck.
I really liked the first one too. I just wish they would've added some DLC for the first one because after awhile you've most the same questions. I'm looking forward to the online multiplayer.
From what I've been hearing, they're supposed to really support the new version of the game with DLC... it's the least they can do, seeing as how it's going to be one of the first games that go along with the new XBL "experience".
I always ruled at the original Scene-It for the 360. Most of which I already knew but after you play the game for so long, you get the same questions so it turns into memorization. That's where the DLC comes into play which will help make this game even more badass. Hopefully it doesn't cost a decent amount to download new questions though.

The game without the special controllers is $40 Smackers. I can't see the DLC being that expensive. Unless they nickel and dime you and make you buy the DLC by Genres....Horror , Sci-Fi, Comedy, Drama etc....
Hopefully, it's lumped into one DLC package.
I just played the demo and I like the general layout of it. I miss the commentator guy from the first Scene It though. When four people are playing and this dude is talking sh*t, it always makes for some good laughs.
Finally, I got around to playing this game for the first time since receiving it on Christmas... in general, I think it's a big time improvement over the first game. Having the ability to play it over XBL is reason enough for me to like this game so much more than the first one... and then there's the upcoming DLC for the game...

I can't believe you miss him. I guess its kind of funny at first because he's such a prick but it gets old way too quick.
