Adding on to the file sizes, remember this:
.avi Will not compress your video. A 2:31 clip will be 550MB
.wmv WILL compress your video. A 2:31 Clip will be 23.4MB
The quality loss is almost unnoticable.
Also the upload/download time is OVER 10 TIMES FASTER
I am only posting this because I saw some video recently 3 minutes long that took over an hour to download

You can compress a video to .avi..you just need to use a codec, like Divx, or Xvid, combined with the right settings for the codec to make the quality look good at a low or decent file size.

If you convert it to DivX, will you be able to upload it to sites, and people will be able to watch it?

Why wouldn't you? It still remains videonamehere.avi...and the only way someone wouldn't be able to watch it is if lets say the video is encoded in Divx, and the person trying to watch it didn't have a Divx video codec..which pretty much everyone has btw. And if not , you can always download it for free or download a free codec pack that will have it in it, plus a few others.

Yeah, whenever I convert it to DivX, it always says:
filename.DivX

Any recommendations on running time?
I captured about 4 hours of video over the weekend, and I'm going to put a decent clip together. What I don't want is the first response being 'it's too long'.
I have lots of experience with video editing, so expect fast action, good cuts, and not a lot of wasted time.

I must be stupid since I don't obsess over a video game's storyline.

IT really depends on the video.
I've made 2 minute videos, and 8 minute videos. The [S3] clan videos were naturally much longer than just a video of my own. If you're making a video of a war, then it should be howver long you can get it without it getting stale, just enough of each map. As long as the kills are decent, keep it going. A montage should be shorter, anywhere from 3-5 minutes. 5 minutes is a bit on the long side, so I'd try to stay lower than 4:30.

If you have that much footage, then just pick a song, and edit the length accordingly. A song. Don't be an Idiot like me and put 4 songs in, no matter what the length of the songs are. The song should set the pace of the video. Just make 2 or mabye even 3 videos if you have enough footage. That way if one has a major flaw, the others won't be affected.
