Yea Im a fan of laying it down horizontally. However, I have had not neccessarily a "scratch" problem, but more of a read error problem. Every 2 hours or so the game stops (oblivion), the dashboard pulls up, and says "Unable to read disc. The disc is scratched. Clean the bla bla bla bla bla" Now wait a minute, the disc is imaculate. I keep them that way. Not a scratch, print, blemish, moisture, NOTHING on either surface ANYWHERE! Its obviously an internal problem with the system. Its a bit bothersome because if the system is unable support the earliest series of games that are out, how will it be able to handle games that are created to show the 360's "true potential"? I just eject the disc, insert it back in, and all is well. Its annoying at most until you think about how much you paid for the system.

How long ago did you get your system? Did you send in for the $59 two year unlimited warranty that they offered? (I did.) From what I have read, earlier versions of the console have HDD cache problems... but if you only have the core system, then that wouldn't apply to you. hehe
Try contacting Microsoft about the problem if it gets to be too much to take... I've heard nothing but good things about their customer service.
(They're the total opposite of Sony's p.o.s. customer service team.)

Sony has customer service?
Yea I was pretty slack about my Xbox, I didnt send in the one year warranty card yet, and I didnt even know about the 2 year unlimited warranty wich I would happily purchase. About the HDD cache, I got my 360 from best buy a couple of weeks ago. I assume thats its "newer" 360 just because of the scarcity of those damn things but I guess it just be an older model thats been recirculated through the stores. Any way to tell the born on date of your 360? No core here btw!!

Yours sounds as new as mine is... I think they're technically third or fourth "generation" 360s.
Definitely get that 2 year warranty card sent it... it's worth it, if you ask me.

Ye that kind of makes me hate the Xbox even more. I did that with my Ps2 and nothing happened to my disk.

Then consider yourself lucky... I've done nothing of the sort to my p.o.s. PS2, and I've had nothing short of total problems with the p.o.s.
And way to be a fanboy about your "opinion" of the Xbox... way to go, champ.

See, Ive never had any problems with my PS2 ($300 old school). Ive always had the same controller, same memory card, and even had the original Socom headset up until the end of Socom 2. Aside from Sony's worthless customer relationship problem, their products have always treated me well. (KNOCK ON WOOD)
Xbox on the other hand has always seemed problematic. My roomate went through 2 brand new Xboxs and continued to have problems with them to this day. They just wouldnt turn on. "Does the Xbox turn on today? #$%&!! Nope, oh well... You guys want to watch TV?"

Bottom line...
Xbox's "customer service" > Sony's "customer service"

All the people that had any problems, seem to be first gen owners. I have a second gen and have had no problems at all. The second gen's also use a different dvd drive. The whole thing with the disk scratching, is people's fault mostly... It says right in the manual do not flip vertically/horizontally while a disk is in spinning.

THe guy that I bought the 360 from said that if you move the 360 around when the game is playing there is a high risk of scratching your disk.
