Getting your headset to work with a home router (NetGear)
I had similar problems. You have to go in and open up the ports on your router. If you have a NetGear router try this. If you don't have a NetGear router, you will still need to perform the steps below, but you'll have to figure out how to get to the different setup screens.
Log into your router using the Admin login.
Look at "Attached Devices" and find your IP address (192.168.0.3 in my case). I didn't have a name show up for my PS2, it just shows up as "--" with the HEX address.
Go into WAM Settings, check the DMZ BOX, entered your IP address
Go into DHCP Settings and reserve your IP address for your device.
Go into PORT TRIGGERING / PORT FORWARDING and create a new PORT FORWARDING setting. Enter your IP, select UDP and open up ports 6000 through 6999.

I did this and I've have had very few problems with my headset.
I still have problems every once in a while. Sometimes if I switch servers or games it clears up, other times I have to reset the PS2. After performing the steps above I have only had problems about 5% of the time.
