I personally use custom settings. I crank up the acceleration and look speed to the max to keep up with potential targets in my scope when sniping. My deadzone is usually set to around the middle area

I keep dead zone near the middle if not the exact middle, and acceleration I turn down as well as look speed. These adjustments are minor, but they work for me with assault rifles. The only disadvantage of turning look/accelleration down is when sniping.

I left everything at the original settings and it works perfectly fine for me.

Deadzone is the amount of space around the resting place of your joystick, in which, it won't register controller input. So if its high, you'll have to move the joystick alot, before it even registers. Setting the deadzone higher is especially useful if you have a controller, where one of the joysticks is constantly moving the character.

The best thing to do is put your customs how you think you would like it and play a respawn with it to get used to it. I have noticed that when I change mine, my shooting is a little off for the first game or two as I get used to it. If you are gunning I like to put look speed at about 70%, acceleration 60% and dead zone at 50%-60%. If you are a sniper, you probably want more look speed and acceleration. I know some people use full look speed and acceleration as a gunner as well, but it doesn't work for me. I guess it is just all about what you prefer, but I would say the faster you can have your look speed and still be accurate(put your crosshairs where you want them) the better.
